At supper, there was silence for the first few minutes while everyone sampled Joan’s bolognese. Burns ate a whole plate quickly before declaring it “just fine—very fine indeed,” and helped himself to another. Peter sucked the sauce off single strands of spaghetti before slurping them, his delicate fingers orange and sticky. Miša closed her eyes appreciatively as Burns spooned sauce into her mouth between bites of his own. Sometimes Miša fed herself, but, it seemed to Joan, that was more and more rare.

“It’s like…” Miša crooned. “It’s just like being in America!”

Burns’s eyes crinkled. “You don’t mean Italy, dear?” he asked.

“No,” she insisted. “It is like spaghetti we had when I went to America with my dance troupe.”

“That was fifteen years ago, Miška! You still remember the taste?”

“Yes, and the wine. The wine was terrible. I have never since had such awful wine.” She smiled at Joan. “My grammar is excellent, is it not? Like your bolognese.”

Joan felt uncomfortably pleased that her cooking had passed the test. She blushed and squirmed slightly. Even Pani nodded her head approvingly.

“Ako v reštaurácii,” she said. Like the restaurant.
